UPLB Babaylan Participates in AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day/World No Tobacco Day

In celebration of the AIDS Candlelight Memorial day and World No Tobacco Day, the municipality of Los Baños conducted a program about smoking and HIV-AIDs.



The lectures were about history and effects of smoking, some common STIs and prevention of HIV-AIDs which was discussed by UPLB Babaylan president, Ms. Corina "Allan" Marañan.

Other UPLB Babaylan participants were Benjie Villacruel, Heather "Hero" Arrogante, John Paul "Athena" Romero and yours truly, Samuel Brando "Portia" Piamonte.

High school and college students from different schools participated in the said program.

During Marañan's lecture, participants, as well as facilitators, had fun while listening. Games and prizes were given during her lecture. Moreover, demonstration on proper wearing of condoms was done.

Right after the lectures was the candle lighting where the candles are dedicated to those people who died because of AIDs. Lastly, Villacruel shared his thoughts to the participants.

It was on July 6, 2009 when 41 individuals gathered at the Humanities Steps and marked the establishment of UPLB Babaylan, a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students' support group which believes in the inherent equality of all persons regardless of status or condition. For the organization, this inherent equality implies that human beings should not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation.
